Already have a license/permit? Skip the permit — practice legally right away.

Your step-by-step path

  1. A · Request a driver license number. Start your application in License Express, or at a DOL office. You'll get a DOL number that follows you through every step.
  2. B · Knowledge test. Study the WA Driver Guide and our free practice tests, then book your knowledge test. 40 questions, 80% to pass; available in Chinese and Spanish.
  3. C · Apply for an instruction permit. After you pass, get your permit so you can practice legally — online in License Express (pay, save, print), or at a DOL office. Skip this step if you already hold a valid license from another country or a permit from another U.S. state.
  4. D · Driving practice. Practice with a licensed driver, or book practice lessons with us. A permit or valid driver license is required for lessons and warm-ups.
  5. E · Road (driving) test. Book your road test. A permit is not required just to take the test — a valid photo ID is enough. Your result is valid for one year.
  6. F · Get your driver license. Get a temporary license (online via License Express 'Original license issuance', or at a DOL office); your permanent card then arrives by mail.

Frequently asked questions

Do adults need driver's education in Washington?
No. Driver education is only required for teens under 18. Adults 18+ can go straight to the knowledge test and then the road test.
What is a WDL / DOL number and how do I get one?
It's the customer number the DOL assigns when you start your driver license application (online in License Express or at a DOL office). You don't apply for it separately.
Where can I practice test questions?
Study the free WA Driver Guide at dol.wa.gov and use our free practice tests until you consistently score 90%+.
What languages can I take the tests in?
The knowledge test is offered in many languages, including Chinese and Spanish. The road test is currently available in English and Chinese.
Do I need an instruction permit to take the road test?
No — a valid photo ID is enough to take the drive test. You do need a permit (or a valid driver license) for lessons and warm-ups.
