Walking into a Washington driver licensing office without an appointment often means being turned away — same-day service is not guaranteed. The DOL scheduler is not obvious to use, so here are the four screens in order, followed by the offices around Seattle with the days each one is closed.
Book it in four steps
Use an email you can actually open — your confirmation code goes there. The cell number you give is the one you text from to check in on the day. Same-day appointments are released every morning at 8:20 a.m.
- Step 1 Open the DOL scheduler and choose Schedule Appointment.
- Step 2 Read the instructions, complete the security check, tap Next, then pick the driver licensing category (Driver Licensing Office) — not prorate or fuel tax.
- Step 3 For the service, choose Get an original non-commercial license — a new WA license, permit, or ID.
- Step 4 Enter your WA DLN (driver license number), or tick I'm not able to provide my DLN, then pick an office, date, and time.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment at the DOL?
Not strictly, but same-day service without one is not guaranteed and is often unavailable. Booking ahead is the reliable way.
When are same-day appointments released?
Every morning at 8:20 a.m. If nothing is available for the date you want, check back at that time.
Which service should I choose?
Get an original non-commercial license. That single option covers a new Washington driver license, an instruction permit, and a state ID.
What if I do not have a DLN yet?
Tick “I’m not able to provide my DLN” and continue. You can also get a WDL number first through License Express.
Do I take the knowledge or road test at a DOL office?
Not necessarily. Washington licenses private testing centers to give both tests. We are a DOL-approved center in North Seattle, which is usually faster to book than a state office.
