Steps D, E and F have no fixed order — complete them in any sequence.
For 6 months before you apply for the license: be free of any traffic violations or convictions, and have no alcohol or drug offenses while driving on your instruction permit.

Your step-by-step path

  1. A · Request a driver license number. Start your application in License Express, or at a DOL office. You'll get a DOL number that follows you through every step.
  2. B · Knowledge test. Study the WA Driver Guide and our free practice tests, then book your knowledge test. 40 questions, 80% to pass; available in Chinese and Spanish.
  3. C · Apply for an instruction permit. After you pass the knowledge test, get your permit so you can practice legally — online in License Express (pay, save, print), or at a DOL office.
  4. D · Behind-the-wheel (BTW) driving with us. 5 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice plus 1 hour of drive observation, one-on-one with our instructors.
  5. E · Traffic Safety Education (TSE). Complete an approved 30-hour driver-education course. This is required for drivers under 18 before the road test. Book the TSE course with us.
  6. F · Supervised driving practice. Hold your instruction permit for at least 6 months, and log at least 40 hours of daytime driving and 10 hours of night driving with a licensed driver who has 3+ years of experience. A parent, guardian, or responsible adult must attest to these hours. Track these hours two ways: write them in the supervised driving log, or download the free RoadReady app and log every drive on your phone.

  7. G · Road (driving) test. Book your road test. Bring a valid photo ID. Your result is valid for one year.
  8. H · Get your intermediate license. Once all the steps above are complete, get your license: a temporary license online via License Express (“Original license issuance”) or at a DOL office; your permanent card then arrives by mail. Under-18 drivers receive an intermediate license with passenger and night-driving limits during the first year.

Frequently asked questions

Does my teen need driver's ed in Washington?
Yes. Drivers under 18 must complete an approved Traffic Safety Education (TSE) course — 30 hours of classroom plus behind-the-wheel training — before the road test.
How many practice hours are required?
At least 50 hours total: 40 hours daytime + 10 hours at night, with a licensed driver who has 3+ years of experience. A parent, guardian, or responsible adult must attest to the hours, and the permit must be held at least 6 months.
What is an intermediate license?
It's the license teens get before 18. For the first 6 months no passengers under 20 (family excepted), and no driving 1–5 AM unless supervised; these restrictions end at 18.
