Which documents count?
Almost every status gets there — citizen, green card, work visa, student, visitor. Find your line below and bring those.
Bring as many photo IDs as you can — don't count on just one.
Find your situation first
- U.S. citizen — U.S. passport, book or card. No passport? A Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization with a clear photo and signature also works. The Enhanced license (EDL) is for citizens only.
- Permanent resident — your green card (I-551) is enough on its own.
- Work visa (H-1B, L, O, TN and the like) — foreign passport + I-94. Bring your I-766 work permit and your U.S. visa as well if you have them.
- Student visa (F-1) — foreign passport + I-94 + I-20. On a J-1, bring the DS-2019 instead of the I-20. Bring your U.S. visa too.
- Tourist or business visa (B-1/B-2) — foreign passport + I-94; you can print the I-94 free at i94.cbp.dhs.gov. A B1/B2 Border Crossing Card counts as well. Per DOL, a standard license 'does not indicate a person's residency or legal status' — but you still have to give a Washington home address and a mailing address, because the card is mailed to you.
- Refugee, asylee, or humanitarian parole — refugee verification packet, I-571 travel document, or I-766 work permit.
- Coming from another U.S. state — your state license, valid or expired no more than 1 year. Expired 1 to 6 years still counts, but bring a second document with it.
- Under 18 — a parent or guardian has to give permission, and you must finish a DOL-approved traffic safety education course; the school sends DOL the proof. You still bring ID from the list below.
- Age 25 or younger and short on documents — a parent or guardian can come with you: their own primary ID, one document for you, and something that links you to them, such as your birth certificate or adoption papers.
Full list — if none of those fit you
Bring one of the following — where a line shows a +, bring both:
- U.S. passport (book or card) — an emergency passport is not accepted
- Green card — I-551 Permanent Resident Card
- Work permit — I-766 Employment Authorization
- Foreign passport + I-94 or I-20 — students bring the I-20 / DS-2019
- Driver license, permit, or ID from any U.S. state — valid, or expired no more than 1 year
- Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization — photo and signature must be clear
Have none of these? DOL accepts other combinations of documents — the full rules are on the page linked below.
Still can't put a working set together? Ask the counter for an ID review. DOL can set the list aside when your other documents clearly establish who you are.
Bring originals. Photocopies, scans, and photos on your phone are not accepted.
For a driver license you must also give your Social Security number. Never had one? You can sign a declaration at the counter.
You also give a Washington home address, plus a mailing address if it's different — that's where the card gets sent. No lease or utility bill is needed for a standard license.
Documents not in English: DOL will try to translate them. If nobody on duty reads the language, they can ask you for a certified English translation.

- Green card — I-551 Permanent Resident Card
- Permiso de trabajo — I-766 Employment Authorization
- Pasaporte extranjero + I-94 o I-20 — los estudiantes traen el I-20 / DS-2019
- Licencia, permiso o ID de cualquier estado de EE. UU.
