Two questions come up before anything else: what will this cost me, and how long will it take? This page gives you the real 2026 numbers — the fees Washington DOL charges, what testing and lessons cost at our DOL-approved center in North Seattle, and a realistic timeline for four different starting points.
The short answer
If you already drive well and just need the Washington license: our part costs $110–$180 and takes 1–3 weeks — the knowledge test ($30–$100) and the road test ($80). The same-day option covering both tests is $200.
If you are learning to drive from scratch: our 6-hour package is $720 and already includes unlimited knowledge and road test attempts. Plan on 1–3 months.
For a teen under 18: the state-required driver education course is $866 with us, and that already includes unlimited knowledge and road test attempts.
What Washington DOL charges (official fees)
These go to the state, not to a driving school, and are the same everywhere in Washington:
• Instruction permit — $35, valid 1 year
• Driver license (first time) — $111 for 6 years, or $131 for 8 years
• License renewal — $61 for 6 years, or $81 for 8 years
• ID card — $61 for 6 years, or $81 for 8 years
DOL does not set a statewide price for the knowledge test or the road test. Its fee page says the cost varies by testing location — which is why the next section matters.
These state fees are paid to DOL, not to us — every driving school's students pay them the same. The prices in the next sections are only what you pay us.
What testing and lessons cost at our center
We are a DOL-approved testing center at 11328 Roosevelt Way NE in North Seattle, so you take the official tests with us rather than waiting for a state office appointment.
Knowledge (written) test — $30 for one attempt, $40 for two attempts, or $100 for unlimited attempts until you pass.
Road (skills) test — $80 for the test on its own. With a warm-up drive in our car right before it: $130 (30 min), $150 (40 min) or $180 (1 hour).
Private driving lessons — $100 for 60 minutes, $150 for 90 minutes, $190 for 2 hours. Packages bring the hourly rate down: 6 hours $720, 7 hours $800, 10 hours $990.
Teen driver education — $866 for the full state-required course: 30 classroom hours, 6 hours behind the wheel, and unlimited knowledge and road test attempts.
Our cars are used for lessons and tests, insurance included, so you do not need your own vehicle.
Path 1 — New to driving (first-time drivers and UW students)
This is the most common path for university students and anyone who has never held a license.
Cost with us: the 6-hour package at $720 is the usual choice — six hours of lessons plus unlimited knowledge and road test attempts, so there is nothing more to pay us. Paying per item instead: $30–$100 knowledge test, $100 per 60-minute lesson, $80 road test.
Time: the knowledge test itself is a one-hour appointment and you get the result on the spot. What sets the pace afterwards is practice — most new drivers need somewhere between 6 and 10 hours behind the wheel before a road test is realistic. Students who practice twice a week are usually testing within 4 to 6 weeks.
The University District is about 10 minutes from our center, and our road test routes are the streets you will actually be driving on.
Path 2 — You already drive and hold a license from another country
If you have recently moved to Washington with a license from China, Taiwan, India, Mexico, or anywhere else, you do not start over — but Washington does not automatically convert a foreign license either. You still take the knowledge test and the road test.
Cost with us: $110–$280 — the knowledge test ($30–$100) plus the road test ($80, or $130–$180 if you want a warm-up drive in our car first). Both tests on the same day is $200.
Time: often one to two weeks. Many drivers in this group book the knowledge test and the road test in the same week. We also have a same-day option that covers both tests for $200.
Bring your foreign license with you if you want any driving time before the test — you cannot warm up in our car without a valid permit or a foreign license.
The knowledge test can be taken in Chinese, Spanish and several other languages, so an unfamiliar language is not what stands between you and the license.
Path 3 — Your teen is 15 to 18
Washington requires drivers under 18 to complete a state-approved driver education course before they can get a license. That course, not the fees, is the main cost.
Cost with us: $866 for the whole course — 30 classroom hours plus 6 hours behind the wheel, with unlimited knowledge and road test attempts included. Nothing else is owed to us.
Time: plan on a few months rather than a few weeks. The classroom hours run on a set schedule, and Washington also requires teens to hold their permit for a period before the license is issued. Our teen guide walks through the full sequence.
Enrollment is $100 to hold the place; the rest is paid on the first day of class. We currently enroll students aged 15½ and older.
How to spend less
Pick the right knowledge-test package. One attempt is $30 and two are $40, but if you have not studied the official Driver Guide, the $100 unlimited option costs less than failing three times. Our free practice test with 196 questions is the cheapest insurance of all.
Do not buy lesson hours you do not need. Book one 60-minute lesson first and ask your instructor how many more you actually need before a road test — that answer is worth more than any package discount.
If you are buying more than five hours, the 6-hour package at $720 is already cheaper per hour than single lessons, and it includes unlimited test attempts.
Book the warm-up only if you are testing in an unfamiliar car. If you have practiced in our car already, the $80 test on its own is enough.
Where our students come from
Most people who test with us live within about 20 miles of the center: the University District and north Seattle, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Mountlake Terrace, Lynnwood and Edmonds, and across the water in Kirkland, Redmond, Bellevue, Sammamish, Mercer Island and Renton.
Instruction is available in English and Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), and the written test can be taken in Spanish and other languages.
