The Washington (WA) DOL knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to get your instruction permit or driver license. This guide explains exactly what's on it, the passing score, what to bring, and a proven step-by-step way to pass on your first try — including how to take the test in Chinese or Spanish. Kung Fu Driving School is a DOL-approved testing center in Seattle.
What's on the WA knowledge test
The knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions covering traffic laws, road signs, safe-driving practices, driving under the influence (DUI), and what to do after a collision.
Every question is drawn from the official Washington Driver Guide. There are no trick questions — each answer is in the guide.
Passing score and the "skip" rule
You pass with at least 80% — that is 32 correct out of 40.
During the exam you may skip up to 5 questions. At the very end, the skipped questions are asked again, but this time you cannot skip them. Use the skips to buy thinking time on a few hard questions, not to avoid them.
Can I take it in Chinese or Spanish?
Yes. The WA DOL knowledge test is offered in multiple languages, including Chinese and Spanish. When you book with us, choose your language and our bilingual staff will help you through the whole process.
What to bring on test day
Bring any photo ID — for example a WA ID, a passport, a driver license from another country, a green card, or even an expired driver license. Book your appointment online in advance so you don't have to wait at the counter.
Step-by-step: how to pass on your first try
- Read the Washington Driver Guide. Skim it once for the big picture, then re-read the sections on road signs and right-of-way — those trip up the most people.
- Take free online practice tests. Practice until you consistently score 90% or higher. Our free practice test gives answers and explanations in English, Chinese and Spanish.
- Master road signs and right-of-way. These are the two highest-failure topics. Learn signs by shape and color so you recognize them instantly.
- Book your test in your language. Reserve online and pick your preferred language. Booking ahead means no long wait.
- On test day, read carefully and pace yourself. Bring your ID, arrive a few minutes early, read each question fully, and use your 5 skips on the toughest questions.
What if I don't pass?
You can retake the test. If you'd rather not worry about a second trip, our Two-Attempts package covers a free second attempt, so a single mistake doesn't cost you extra.
Most students who practice to a steady 90%+ on our free test pass comfortably the first time.
